2017 Racine County Meat Animal Quality Assurance (MAQA) Program

The National Pork Board requires that all youth who show/sell swine must participate in MAQA.  The MAQA program is open to youth ages 8 – 19 (as of January 1, 2017) in grades 3 – 13.

Youth have two options to meet this requirement:

  1. Attend a training session, which provides a 1 year Youth of any age may choose this option, but beginners (youth ages 8 – 11 as of January 1, 2017) must attend a training session – they cannot test out.

OR

  1. Test out, which allows you to skip the training session, and provides a 1 year This option is only open to youth ages 12 – 19 (as of January 1, 2017).  In order to pass the test, a score of 70% or better is necessary.  If you don’t pass the test, you will be required to stay for the training.  The test covers all livestock species, not just swine.  If you would like to prepare for the test, study materials are available at https://fyi.extension.wisc.edu/maqa/study-materials/.

Note on testing in 2017: In past years, testing out provided a certification valid for multiple years – this is not the case for 2017.  Because of a new youth animal quality assurance program that will debut in 2018, those who test out this year will only receive a certification valid for 1 year. Thus, the primary advantage of testing out this year is the ability to skip the training session.
