4-H Swine Project
Fun Fact-During the War of 1812, a New York pork packer named Sam Wilson shipped several hundred barrels of pork to U.S. troops. Each barrel was stamped “U.S.”, and it was quickly said that the “U.S.” stood for “Uncle Sam,” whose large shipment seemed to be enough to feed the entire army. This is how “Uncle Sam” came to represent the U.S. Government.

Project Goals
The goal of the 4-H market hog project is to encourage integrity, sportsmanship, cooperation and an ability to communicate through activities such as demonstrations, talks, judging events, tours and exhibits.
Key Terms/Project Areas
Barrow- male pig castrated before reaching sexual maturity
Boar- primarily used for breeding purposes only, since it is said that testosterone in the system gives the meat a foul taste
Gilt- young female that has not yet produced a litter
Sow- female which has farrowed at least once
