4-H Horse and Pony Project

Fun Fact- Horses produce approximately 10 gallons of saliva (spit) each day.

Project Goals

The 4-H horse program allows youth to develop horsemanship skills. You will also learn skills through educational activities such as horse judging, horse bowls, hippology, speech and demonstration contests. You don’t have to own a horse to be involved. 

Key Terms/Project Areas

  • Colt – A young male horse, 4 years old or younger
  • Filly – A young female horse, 4 years old or younger
  • Foal – A newborn or very young horse, male or female
  • Gelding – A male horse that has been castrated, or gelded
  • Mare – A mature female horse
  • Stallion – A male horse that has not been castrated
  • Dam – The term give to a female horse when she becomes a mother
  • Sire – The term given to a stallion when he becomes a father

 

County Activities

Horse/Horseless Horse Project Workshops and Clinics: Workshops are held at Raymond Town Hall and clinics are held at Racine County Fair Grounds unless otherwise noted

The workshop and clinic dates for 2012-2013 are:

January  9 – 6:30pm Workshop “Field Trip” @ Bent Horse Shoe Farm; 5216 County Road V, Franksville WI  53126

January 17 – 7pm Workshop @ Raymond Kristina Wilken on Nutrition

February 21 – 7pm Workshop @ Raymond on Judging

March 21 – 7pm Workshop @ Raymond Historical Horse Medieval / War Horse Presentation

March 23 -   Tack Sale 9am-2pm @ Yorkville Elemetary School

April 19 — 21  — Midwest Horse Fair, Alliant Energy Center, Madison

May 1st –  Horse ID forms, copy of negative coggins, proof of vaccinations and premise ID Due to Fair Office, PO Box 104, Union Grove, WI  53182

May 11 – 9-noon Clinic with Jen Zahorik ENGLISH EQUITATION & HORSEMANSHIP

May 16 – Workshop 7PM @ Raymond Safety & Fair Tags

May 18 – 9 – noon Clinic with Stefanie Yakowenko-Adams

May 20 – 6-8PM Clinic with Jennifer Raemisch / TRAIL

May 25 – 10:30 – 12:30 Clinic with Marge Cook / SHOWMANSHIP

June 1 – 9AM-4PM Clinic with Jon Wolf

June 3 – 6-8PM Clinic with Colleen Vondra (gymkhana)

June 8 – 9-Noon Clinic with Betty Kowalski will be in big arena when done gymkhana will move

June 8 –  10AM-1PM  Sarah Schlitz (gymkhana)  Will begin in the practice arena and move when Betty is done

June 10 – 6-8PM Clinic with Colleen Vondra (gymkhana)

June 12 – 6-8PM Clinic OPEN / SUNNYSIDE & CLEVER CLOVERS

June 15 – 4PM Set up for Fathers Day Show

*July 10 –  6-8PM Clinic OPEN No credit/ KAND DO & YORKVILLE

*July 13 – 8-11AM Clinic with Sarah Schlitz Gymkhana

July 14 — 11:30AM Hippology Test/Poster/Model Horse Judging at Raymond

July 18 – Workshop 7PM @ Fair Grounds / Clean up horse area for Fair / Bring Shovels and brooms

July 23 – Time to be determined / HAUL IN FOR FAIR

July 24 – 28 RACINE COUNTY FAIR                                              

All clinics are held at the Racine County Fairgrounds at 6pm.  They are sponsored by different clubs in the county.
